TRYING TO CONCEIVE
Step 1- Preparing for pregnancy.
- If you are pro-vaccination, then it is a good idea to check that all of your vaccinations are up to date including influenza and whooping cough, this can help to protect you and the baby during pregnancy and after baby is born.
- If you are anti-vaccination, its still a good idea to have a check up and make sure you are in good health. Start taking some vitamins, you can start taking pregnancy vitamins prior to falling pregnant- if you find that pregnancy or womens vitamins make you ill (some people do including myself) its still worth finding some other important vitamins to take seperately to ensure you are getting adequate intake to ensure you have a good amount of vitamins in your body when you do become pregnant and throughout your pregnancy. Also try to check what vitamins are safe while trying to conceive and during pregnancy to protect your immune system.
- Its not just you who should go to have a check up to make sure everything is in good health, your husband or partner should also. It is also a good idea that he go on some vitamins also - menevit is a good one, it helps to ensure that all sperm are healthy and fit to reduce the risk of any ill sperm passing through and thus creating a sick baby . However, other vitamins such as Folate supplements are still helpful for men to promote sperm health if you dont have the large quanities of money involved in purchasing menevit.
- Its never to early to start investigating pregnancy and birth care options, your rights and legalities. Remember you can never do too much research and NEVER let anyone push you into anything you dont want to do and ALWAYS get 2nd,3rd and 4th opinions - research will help you a lot in making a lot of descissions and throughout your pregnancy & childbirth.
-If you are a smoker try to quit before you try to conceive because smoking has proven to increase the risk of low birth weight and SIDS death rate is a lot higher for babies exposed to smoke during pregnancy and after the birth.
- If your partner is a smoker or anyone else in your household it is advised they try to quit also for the sake of the baby as you are breathing in 2nd hand smoke whenever you are near them (it remains on their clothes if they smoke away from you)- this is almost as bad as smoking yourself and it can increase risks for the baby.
If they do not want to quit ask them to smoke outside and to please shower and/or change their clothes before coming near you.
-If you or your partner do drugs stop now- studies have shown that drugs may effect the womens fertility and do effect the mans sperm count. Some drugs can cause, misscarriage, preterm labor, low birth weight and under developed babies.
- Get out and exercise the fitter you get the better your body will cope with pregnancy
- Find out if your family members & your partners family members have any health problems and if they do have any try and get a referal to a genetic counciller to see how and if this will effect you or your baby
- Start tracking your cycles through use of BBT - it is recommeded to do this every morning but can be used at anytime in the day but it has to be the same time every day this records fluctuations in your body temperature to give you a better indication of what is going on, keeping an eye on ovulation you can get ovulation stips or even microscopes that can help indicate when you are ovulating, online fertility calenders and calculators are great too. It is also advisable to learn about your own body, its signs and types of mucus (I am still learning how to recognise and do this myself so will keep you posted)
A fantastic way to chart your fertility is through a fantastic site called Fertility Friend - its a free informative system, where you can track your fertility through charting - it uses the information you put in to determine each month your fertile times, your min -max length of your cycles, your luteal phase (including if you have a luteal phase defect it can pinpoint it so you can see a GP or OB to assist you in rectifying the defect to enhance your chance of conceiving and continuing a pregnancy), your ovulation times and can even indicate pregnancy, possible chemical pregnancy & even miscarriage- all through your signs (your signs include Base Thermometer Temps, Cervical Mucus, Cervical Position, OPK Results, Fern Tests, Fertility Indicator Kits, Periods, Spotting & even body signs such as bloating, pains, headaches, depression, moods, energy levels and much more)- the site also provides a lot of information for people trying to conceive, support through forums, advice centres and information, support for pregnancy, loss and even birth.
-Get lots of sleep, this will help your body to prepare.
MYTHS, FACTS & METHODS THAT MIGHT HELP TO CONCEIVE A GIRL
Please note that there are many different methods and I have just added ones that I have found have worked with people I know and myself (mind you we changed our mind about trying for our 2nd baby straight after the first time we tried and also had a broken condom issue after as well)- several weeks later I started putting on weight no other signs and we found out I was pregnant but happy to find out our methods worked and we had a little girl (as we weren't tracking at that stage we are not certain whether it was the original try before change of mind or the broken condom that resulted in our girl but we are certain that the Girl Diet did work for us)
Also note studies have proven that diet if stuck to for at least a week before trying to conceive can impact on the sex of the baby. For a girl it is reccomended a high dairy and low potasium diet is the way to go
DIET ( I found this method really helped but you need to be on the diet for at least 1 week before trying)
- 2 tubs of yogurt per day (all natural is the best one- if you want flavour add it yourself but it works better than the other stuff apparently)
- 1 Litre of milk per day ( dont drink it all at once or you are going to make yourself sick)
- Lots of pineapple creates an accidic enviroment more favorable to female sperm
- Cheese and crackers daily
-Avoid meats esspecially red meats the week before you try to conceive.
- Avoid chocolate but lollies are okay.
-Eat lots of fresh fruits, carrots and corn
- Try to avoid salty foods and eat as many accidic foods as possible and as much dairy as possible. Although I found it nice too have chips and dip (as most dips are made with dairy I figured the dairy dip overrode most of the salt in the chips anyway)
-Your partner should also avoid salty foods
Try to steer away for nuts,, salty foods, meats esspecially red meats, potatos and bananas, caffine, spinage and orange juice.
OTHER METHODS OTHER THAN DIET (I didnt really try these so cant say if they work or not)
SHETTLES METHOD
Shettles says in order to increase the chances of having a girl, you should have sex everyday from the end of your period up to 2 1/2 to 3 days before ovulation. After this point, do not have unprotected sex until several days past ovulation.
Intercourse further away from ovulation favors the larger slower moving X (girl) sperm. The weaker Y (boy) sperm will die more quickly in the more acidic preovulatory vaginal / cervical secretions and by the time of ovulation there will be a much larger concentration of X (girl) sperm available to fertilize the egg.
Shettles suggests that if you are trying to conceive a girl, shallow penetration from your partner, preferably with the missionary position, will deposit the sperm closer to the entrance to the vagina. This area is more acidic than closer to the cervix and acidity will work against the weaker “boy” sperm leaving more “girl” sperm available to fertilize your egg
When trying to conceive a girl, Shettles recommends that you don’t orgasm during sex as the body produces substances after orgasm that makes the vaginal environment more alkaline, which favors the “boy” sperm
The contractions which accompany an orgasm help move the sperm up and into the cervix, giving the “boy” sperm an extra chance at being available when your egg is available for fertilization
O+12 METHOD (Developed by an Australian Mum who had 6 sons before managing to have a girl. This method has an even higher success rate than the well respected Shettles Method- more in debth information can be found on GOOGLE)
- The father must not ejaculate for at least 7 days before intercourse (and preferably longer). That didn't say "no sex", it said "no ejaculation", so you better keep an eye on him in the shower. Try to get him to abstain from the first day of your cycle. The reason for this is that since female sperm supposedly live longer, an "old" batch of sperm should have more female than male sperm (about 2% more, according to some data).
- Have intercourse once only, 8 to 20 hours after ovulation. Start counting the 8-20 hours when...
- Any sharp O pain has subsided.
- Your CM begins to change from EWCM to creamy or sticky.
- Your cervix begins to become less soft and high.
- Do NOT have intercourse again until you are sure you are no longer fertile. Use a condom or wait until you are sure you are no longer fertile before having intercourse again, because that "fresh" batch of sperm will be more likely to have more male sperm.
- You are past your fertile stage when you have had THREE high temperatures on your BBT chart.
Girl Diet is said to be a benificial addition to this method.
MYTHS, FACTS & METHODS TO HELP CONCEIVE A BOY
The BOY DIET
- Eat lots of bananas
- Eat lots of potatoes
- Eat lots of meat and salt
Avoid dairy products and most fruits.
SHETTLES METHOD
Intercourse should happen as close to possible to ovulation to increase the chances of the gender being male.
Intercourse should take place in peak fertile periods and no more than 12 hours before ovulation.
Deeper penetration for example doggy style is more suitable for male sperm this is because they swim faster than female sperm.
Women should acheive orgasm before or at the same time as her partner.
A few cups of coffee before intercourse is said to favour the male sperm
.
